South America
South America is the fourth largest continent in the world, with a rich biodiversity. It features the world’s driest desert, the highest waterfalls, the largest river basins and the longest mountain ranges!!
Our 4-month Adventure Through South America
Let the adventure to South America Begin.........
We spent 4 months travelling a small part of South America and we loved it. It was AMAZING, better than we could’ve ever hoped for.
I say small part because South America is made up of twelve countries, and we managed to visit FOUR!!! Chile, Argentina, Uruguay (slightly cheating because we only went for the day but picked up a passport stamp!) and Brazil. We also made it over to Easter Island, which was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Our trip came with its usual Nick and Nikki dramas and much to Nicks relief they weren’t all based around him this time! ! … A 24hr delayed flight, Lost luggage for the first 3 weeks of our trip – Thanks British Airways! Washing my passport twice in a washing machine in Argentina. Oh and I gotta tell you about Nick having to go to the dentist in Ushuaia for a broken filling that took almost 2hrs to be fixed … need I go on?
BUT…. It was all worth it, with each country, City, Town, Village we visited there was always amazingness around us.
During our travels, we were captivated by the breathtaking natural landscapes in each of the countries we visited, and incredibly touched by the warm hospitality we received.
From the receptionist in Santiago who helped me with my luggage drama… Then there’s the unforgettable experience with Will’s wonderful family in Argentina, who welcomed us with open arms and treated us like their own for an amazng three weeks. And of course, our time with Alexandrea and Cliedson in Buzios, Brazil which was simply heartwarming. Despite the language barrier, (Google Translate to the rescue again!) their genuine warmth and kindness made us feel so welcome.
Our Adventure Starts in Chile...
Our adventure began in Santiago, Chile, after flying in from London. We spent a week mainly shopping because my luggage had a journey of its own, going to Madrid and back to London before I was reunited with it in Buenos Aires 3 weeks later….. DRAMA
Now shopping wasn’t at the top of my list of must-do’s whilst in Santiago, but it had to be done. One outfit which I had travelled over in would not be enough!
In between our shopping trips, we managed to see the sights of Santiago. Booking a walking tour of the city with Guru walks – very interesting. We also visited the largest urban park in Chile, Cerro San Christobel which had great views of the city, and we also enjoyed a spot of wine tasting.
Standout Moments of our trip
Our adventure through South America was filled with unforgettable highlights and unique experiences that truly made it special.
And one of these was our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity trip over to Easter Island ( Rapa Nui ) Visiting Easter Island was a surreal and awe-inspiring experience, with its mysterious Moai statues and captivating landscapes.

One journey that stands out is the 8-hour bus ride from Santiago to I Mendoza. The trip took us over the Andes, weaving through the majestic mountains with sheer drops on one side, providing us with an adrenaline-pumping yet awe-inspiring experience.”
We drank the best red wine ever in Mendoza. I couldn’t tell you the name of the wine but it was served in a little bar called Migaja’s on draught. My mouth waters just thinking about it. And it was dirt che’ap …. 6 very large glasses less than £12
We visited the Salt pans of Salinas Grandes from Salta..
We then headed to Buenos Aires meeting up with Jo and Will for New Year’s Eve! We stayed in Tigre with Will’s family and had a blast over the three weeks, enjoying the delicious food and beautiful architecture. We checked out some tango shows and explored the historic neighborhoods. It was such a fantastic experience!
Also we had a day trip to Colonia, Uruguay. Anything. for a passport stamp.
We zig-zagged through Patagonia starting at The End of the World in Ushuaia in Argentina and travelled by bus over to Punta Arenas, Chile to go and visit Magdalena Island where there is a colony of over 120,000 Magellanic penguins you can walk amongst.
We bused up through Patagonia arriving in El Chaltén a small village in Argentina, located within Los Glaciares National Park. It is known as the trekking capital of Argentina and offers stunning views of the Patagonian wilderness.
And then onto El Calafate to visit Perito Mereno Glacier also in the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, and this glacier still grows approx. 2.2 metres a day despite global warming. It is also considered to be one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the world. Yep, we thought it was impressive.

And then flying over to the magnificentness of Brazil… WOW, WOW, WOW.
Con.. fession time… to be honest the first week of arriving into Florianopolis down in the South of Brazil. I just wanted to go home, it was all too much for me, a bit of a culture shock!!! We were constantly told to be careful, blend in, don’t look like a tourist, don’t walk around with your phone out, this meant
No Google Maps,
No Google Translate,
No taking photos,
Ahhhhhhhhhh …I cant stand it….
So, once we did eventually venture outside of our guesthouse and start exploring the area and beaches ( Florianopolis has 43 to choose from) life slowly got better. Well, sitting on a beach with a cocktail in your hand and the sun beating down on you always helps, the only decision we had each day was … Which beach today, oh and which cocktail??
We then travelled onto. This is where we fell in love with Brazil Buzios………. Buzios, Buzios,,,,,
Buzios, Brazil is a beautiful coastal town known for its crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife. To us it was magical. We stayed in a little guesthouse where we were made to feel so welcome. (maybe a link to Meu Cantiho)
Our adventure in Rio de Janeiro came to a perfect finale with a visit to the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, a true highlight of our trip. The stunning beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana provided us with a relaxing day of basking in the sun before we reluctantly boarded our flight back to London.
